"Staff feel supported in an open culture with good training and activities, but safety risks and stretched staffing hold it back."
We found two people’s thickening agent was not being stored in line with an NHS England safety alert... We also found an error in the recording of one person’s weight which hadn’t been picked up by senior staff.
Staff enjoyed working at the service and told us the registered manager had an open door and they felt supported, receiving sufficient training and were comfortable speaking up.
We had mixed feedback about staffing levels. One staff member said, “There's not enough staff. There is 6 staff and 40 residents, seniors help when they can but it’s not enough. There should be another carer on.”
Staff were supported through induction, training and supervision to help ensure they were competent in their role. A staff member said, “The fire and first aid training is really good that’s yearly. I do the moving and handling. We do a module online which is dementia.”
continued breach of regulation in good governance as further work was required to ensure improvements were embedded into daily practice, senior staff all took individual responsibility to check people were receiving appropriate and safe care and audits were robust and identified any shortfalls
Relatives told us, “There are varied activities and we’ve also visited when the guitar player was there to entertain and it’s such a lovely atmosphere.” A staff member said, “I keep a tick list so I know who I have sat with and done activities with.”
Safety risks like thickening powder left on bedside tables where people could reach it and sticky floors that could cause falls
We found two people who shared a room had their thickening agent sitting on their individual bedside tables... the floor was very sticky in the communal areas. This presented a potential falls risk
Staffing sometimes stretched thin with not enough carers for 40 residents leading to waits for help like one person sitting 20 minutes before lunch
One staff member said, “There's not enough staff. There is 6 staff and 40 residents... We observed a couple of times during the day when people had to wait to be assisted which resulted in 1 person not being prompted at lunchtime in a timely manner.”
Recruitment checks not always followed with gaps in work history and missing references in staff files
We reviewed 5 staff recruitment files and found gaps of employment history in 2... We also found 1 staff member having previously worked in care had no reference from the service they had worked at.
