"Strong leadership, positive staff culture and excellent activities, although initial mental capacity checks were missing for some locked bedroom doors but fixed promptly."
However, during the first day of inspection we noted the provider had not always followed the correct process for making best interest decisions in line with the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA)... The provider and registered manager responded promptly to these concerns and on the second day of inspection we saw appropriate action had been taken.
Staff told us they really enjoyed working at the service and spoke positively about the culture and management. Staff were supported to be valued members of the service.
Staff told us that there was always enough staff on duty to meet the needs of people and the rotas we reviewed showed staffing levels were consistent and maintained by permanent staff.
Staff training was relevant to their role and equipped them with the skills they needed to care for the people living at the service. We saw staff were supported through induction and regular impromptu training was completed at the service, alongside mandatory training.
The registered manager led by example and was a positive role model for her team. People, their visitors and staff expressed high levels of confidence and respect in relation to the management of the service.
A 'social activities co-ordinator' was employed by the service that organised activities on a daily basis... We saw some excellent examples of 1-1 and group activities... poppy selling at a local supermarket, making Christmas tree decorations, colouring and painting acorns and visits from an 'indoor zoo.'
Mental capacity checks were missing at first for some locked bedroom doors, even though they fixed it quickly on the second day of inspection.
We noted the provider had not always followed the correct process for making best interest decisions in line with the Mental Capacity Act 2005 (MCA). We saw some peoples bedroom doors were locked whilst they were in their rooms... capacity assessments and best interests decisions... had not been completed.
