"Great management with approachable leaders and a strong safety culture, but staffing relies on bank staff sometimes and training lacks specialist courses."
The provider had a proactive and positive culture of safety, based on openness and honesty. Staff listened to concerns about safety and investigated and reported safety events. Lessons were learnt to continually identify and embed good practice. Medicines were now being managed safely. People were protected from abuse and avoidable harm.
Staff said there was a positive culture at the service and felt supported in their roles. Staff felt supported and able to speak up, and diversity was valued. There was a positive culture of openness and learning.
Staffing rotas were in place and demonstrated how many staff were available to care for people. The feedback we received from people who used the service, staff and relatives was that staffing levels were sufficient... we also have bank staff available. I feel we have enough to meet people’s needs currently.
Staff told us they received enough training to support them in their role. Staff supervisions and appraisals took place... A member of staff told us, “We have lots of training and Harbour Healthcare are really on the ball with it.”
The registered manager worked hard to ensure everyone felt part of the team by creating a positive inclusive culture, where every job role was valued, with open and respectful communication. The registered manager demonstrated to staff they were approachable by having an open-door policy; the deputy manager also provided support, and both were willing to help with any task.
There were plenty of activities available for people to participate in and we observed several taking place during the inspection, including an arts and crafts activity which was well attended. There was a designated area within the home where activities took place... We observed a meeting taking place in the activities area of the home between people and staff to talk about a Christmas open day event.
Staffing is adequate but they use bank staff sometimes, so shifts might feel a bit stretched now and then.
