"Staff receive good training and support from visible leaders, but staffing shortages cause waits for help and medicines are not managed safely."
Some prescribed medicines were not consistently managed safely... thickening agents... left unsecured... some of the records were not fully legible. In 1 unit there were handwritten amendments... not signed or countersigned.
Staff told us they were supported by the management team and were treated well. When asked about their experience... 1 staff member said there was “Good teamwork,” and they felt supported by the registered manager.
People spoke positively of the staff but felt sometimes more staff were needed. One person told us, “They could do with 2 extra just for taking people to the toilet. There is nothing worse than wanting to go and having to wait if they are busy with someone else.”
Staff told us they were given specific training to support people within the 3 different units... “To work here you have to have your Korsakoff training and... mental health training and... ligature training.” “We have a 2-week long induction... We can request any other training.”
Staff told us leaders were visible and gave them support and guidance as well as demonstrating a caring attitude towards them. Staff had regular meetings with their line managers where they were given opportunities to discuss the service and their own development.
There is an activity programme in the foyer... We go out twice a week. We go to the local pub, garden centre... We have garden parties and celebrate birthdays, it works really well.
Shifts feel stretched because residents sometimes wait for toilet help and might have accidents while staff are busy.
One person told us, “They could do with 2 extra just for taking people to the toilet. There is nothing worse than wanting to go and having to wait if they are busy with someone else.” Another said, “You have to hold on and hope you don’t have an accident.”
Risk records like fluid charts and repositioning checks are often incomplete so it's hard to track care properly.
Records to manage and monitor risks were not always clear... it was not always clear if people received enough to drink in line with their targets... The records were not always clear on whether they had been supported to reposition in line with assessed time intervals.
Medicines are not always stored safely and records have problems like missing signatures or unclear writing.
