"Stable staffing with no agency use and strong safety practices, although activities are limited to everyday outings without special programmes."
Staff had been trained in safeguarding and understood their role and responsibilities to keep people safe. There was a clear safeguarding and whistleblowing policy available at the service. People had personalised risk management plans in place where risk had been identified. These were kept under review and updated if needed. If people experienced distress, there were personalised behaviour support plans in place. The service did not use any restraint.
Staff told us there were enough of them to support people safely and where needed the registered manager stepped in to help them. Staff were observed to be following safe practice and communicated with each other to meet people's needs. The registered manager made sure staff had regular supervisions and an annual appraisal.
Agency staff were not used so people always knew who was coming to provide them care and support. No agency staff were used as there was a stable group of staff employed. Staffing numbers were calculated dependent on people's needs. The registered manager told us they always staffed the service more than needed to allow for any short notice sickness or training.
Staff told us they had enough training to feel competent in all areas. New staff told us they had a thorough induction and were able to spend time shadowing more experienced members of staff before working alone. The registered manager told us staff were encouraged to develop their knowledge and skills by taking work-based qualifications.
All the people we spoke with knew who the registered manager was and felt able to approach her at any time. One person told us they would go to the registered manager or staff with any issue. They said, 'I feel confident they would sort it out.'
We observed during our site visits people were going out swimming, for walks and helping with food preparation. One person said, 'I go to the pub, play darts and pool and go walking in the local area.' Prior to our site visit, people had been involved in planning Christmas activity and parties.
Only everyday outings like swimming and walks plus cooking, no dedicated activities coordinator or special programmes to make the job more varied and fun.
