"Staff feel supported by approachable managers with a positive inclusive culture and good training, but medicines records gaps and frequent agency staff affect consistency."
During our site visit we observed some practices which did not always promote people's safety. These were brought to the attention of staff during the visit and immediately rectified. We also found some concerns regarding the management of medicines which were also actioned immediately.
One staff member said, “A good culture, very open. If anyone had any concerns or worries, they’d be open to going forward and reporting. Very inclusive, feel like everyone is welcomed, almost a bit of a family, everyone speaks their mind.”
There were enough staff available to meet people's needs. However, we received feedback from people, families and partners raising concerns about the consistency of staff and agency usage.
Staff underwent an induction and shadowing period prior to commencing work. They had regular updates to their training to ensure they had the skills and knowledge to carry out their roles. Staff had undertaken specialist training to meet the individual needs of people using the service. For example, autism awareness, positive behaviour support and epilepsy awareness.
Staff spoken to were positive about the support they received and gave examples of when additional support had been given to meet their individual circumstances. One staff commented, “Personally feel supported by managers who are very approachable and helpful.”
Staff supported people to take part in a wide range of activities and holidays to support their independence, health, and well being. One staff commented, “People will identify what activities they want to do through picture cards or other communication. [Name] has 2 holidays every year.”
Some medication records have gaps and safety checks aren't always recorded as often as planned.
Some gaps in recording and conflicting information were also noted on the bowel recording chart and the Medication Administration Record (MAR). Checks for some people were not always being recorded in daily notes at the frequency identified in the care plan.
Staffing is adequate but agency workers are used quite a bit, so there's less consistency.
However, we received concerns from people and relatives regarding consistency and the number of agency staff used. One person said, “Staffing changes frequently all the time.”
