People were safe and protected from the risk of harm. Staff had received safeguarding training... Medicines were safely administered... We were shown a 'lessons learned' folder which included learning from accidents and incidents.
The registered manager and wider management team had created a positive culture at the service where staff supported each other... Staff told us 'I have a supervision meeting every 6 to 8 weeks but I can ask for a meeting anytime. I feel listened to'.
There were enough staff on every shift to manage people's needs. Agency staff were sometimes used to cover unexpected sickness or leave but all agency staff had an induction to the service.
Staff training was up to date... Examples of training included, dementia, diabetes, catheter care and manual handling. Ongoing support was provided to staff through quarterly supervision meetings and annual appraisals.
The registered manager was a visible presence at the service and everyone spoke well of them. Staff comments included 'They are not afraid to get their hands dirty. There is an open door policy and they are always quick to praise staff'.
People had a daily choice and selection of activities... small group activities for example, singing, crafts and quizzes. The activities lead had developed one to one flash cards which helped staff to understand the things people liked to do.
Staffing is adequate but nothing special, with some agency workers covering shifts.
