The service had a proactive and positive culture of safety, based on openness and honesty. They listened to concerns about safety and investigated and reported safety events. Lessons were learnt to continually identify and embed good practice.
Staff told us they were happy working at The Piers, and they worked as a team. One staff member told us, “Working at The Piers feels meaningful and rewarding. The team is supportive, the environment is positive... I feel proud to work here and to contribute to the progress and wellbeing of the individuals we support.”
The registered manager had focused on developing the induction process and supporting staff. As a result, staff turnover was low, agency staff were not used, and people were supported by staff who knew them well.
Staff had received appropriate training and their competency was checked to ensure they worked safely. For example, medicines competency assessments were completed. Staff also received regular supervision.
Management was visible and accessible in the service, we observed the registered manager supporting staff during the inspection. Staff told us they felt supported by management. One staff member told us they felt management were, “very supportive and approachable. They create an environment where staff feel listened to and valued.”
People took part in activities of their choice, both at home and in the community. A relative told us, “My loved one has been going to new experiences in the last 2 years, 2 trips away and a variety of live performances.”
No dedicated activities coordinator or specialist programmes, so the role mixes personal care with community outings and hobbies but lacks extra variety.
