"Adequate staffing and a caring team culture, but serious safety risks from unsecured areas and poor management oversight hold it back."
The service environment was not safe. Essential checks of water safety had not been completed, and necessary fire safety improvements had not been made within required timescales. The kitchen area and service grounds were not secure, exposing people to the risk of avoidable harm.
Staff told us, “We have a good staff team. We are nice to each other and work well together.” “The culture is very homely... caring culture towards people and from staff to each other.”
People, relatives and most staff were happy with staffing levels and told us people received support when they needed it. During our inspection we observed that people received support when they needed it.
The provider and registered manager failed to demonstrate sufficient oversight or understanding of their responsibilities regarding safety. Audits completed by the registered manager and provider visits had failed to identify the safety concerns found during the inspection.
We observed people being supported by care staff with activities such as jigsaw puzzles, and records showed activities, such as chair exercises and bingo took place regularly. Some felt there could be more available.
Safety risks like open kitchens with boiling pans and unsecured gardens where people wandered off mean you have to stay extra alert all shift.
Access to the kitchen area... was not restricted... exposed people... to the risk of injury from hot surfaces... We observed the kitchen door open... a large saucepan of boiling food on the hob. The front and back garden areas were not secure... One person had left the grounds on three occasions.
The manager missed major safety problems in audits and checks, so leadership doesn't catch issues early.
Audits completed by the registered manager and provider visits had failed to identify the safety concerns found during the inspection.
Only basic activities like bingo, jigsaws and chair exercises with no full-time activities coordinator yet, so the job stays mostly routine care.
