People received their prescribed medicines safely and when required. However, improvements were needed to ensure medicine given as and when required was supported by clear guidance as to how a person may express anxiety or pain, and whether the administration of the medication had had the desired effect.
Staff were committed to their work and acknowledged the support they received from the provider, registered manager and management team. Staff spoke positively of their colleagues and of how the staff team worked collaboratively to meet people’s needs.
People’s and family members views about staffing numbers were mixed. Whilst a majority felt there were sufficient staff, others said they believed staffing levels could be improved. A staff member told us, “More staff, and more stable numbers would be good so that staff can take more time with people.”
Staff completed training in key areas linked to people’s health, safety and welfare. Staff training data confirmed good compliance. Staff were supported through regular appraisals, observed practice and one to one supervision.
Staff spoke positively of the support, encouragement and guidance provided by the registered manager and wider management team, stating the registered manager was approachable and listened to staff’s views and opinions.
An activity co-ordinator provided a range of activities for people to engage in. Activities included themed and religious days. External visitors also provided activities and were popular with people. Most people and relatives were aware of the activities held within the home, which they enjoyed, including visits to the local Church and café.
Staff numbers are adequate but some bank staff cover absences and staff say they sometimes feel pushed with workloads.
