"Varied activities programme and some motivated staff, but serious safety risks like choking hazards, staffing shortages and training gaps hold it back."
The service was in breach of legal regulations in relation to people’s safe care and treatment and safeguarding people from abuse... People were not always safeguarded from abuse, we found people did not always have their food prepared in line with their assessed needs... placed people at risk of choking.
We observed mixed morale amongst the staff. Some staff appeared motivated, for example, we observed staff spending quality time with people and this had a positive impact on people’s quality of life. However, some staff appeared disengaged and despondent.
We could not be assured there was always enough staff to efficiently meet people’s needs. For example, call bells were not always responded to promptly, and records showed there were significant delays at times.
Staff had completed a mixture of online and face to face training, however staff were not always able to demonstrate they had the correct knowledge and skills to support people safely.
The provider had recently employed a new deputy manager, home manager and operations manager, who all demonstrated they were passionate, dedicated and had recently identified some of the shortfalls we found during the assessment, there was an action plan in place however the required improvements had not been embedded at the time of our inspection.
Per 2023 comprehensive inspection: The service employed an activities coordinator whose role it was to arrange activities, events and outings for the people living at the home... varied activities programme in place for people to take part in if they wished to. Activities included, quizzes, singing, baking and arts and crafts.
Safety risks are high with choking from wrong food textures, poor infection control like no gloves for dirty waste, and faulty fire doors.
people did not always have their food prepared in line with their assessed needs... risk of choking... staff handling offensive waste without wearing PPE... Fire safety was not always well managed and fire safety checks were ineffective... some fire doors had gaps and did not always close fully.
Not enough staff leading to long waits for call bells which makes the job stressful and rushed.
call bells were not always responded to promptly, and records showed there were significant delays at times.
Training gaps mean staff often can't show they know basics like safe moving or food prep for swallow problems.
staff were not always able to demonstrate they had the correct knowledge and skills... Staff did not always use safe manual handling techniques... staff were not able to describe the consistency of food required for people who had a prescribed modified diet.
