The provider had a proactive and positive culture of safety, based on openness and honesty. Staff listened to concerns about safety and investigated and reported safety events. Lessons were learnt to continually identify and embed good practice.
Staff were positive about the changes that had taken place over the last 12 months, and felt the team were more cohesive with a strong management presence. A member of staff told us, 'Management go above and beyond to help out and take care of all of our residents'
Staff confirmed there were enough staff working during the day and night to support people safely... significant reduction in the use of agency due to the ongoing recruitment to the service.
Staff had completed specific training to support people such as epilepsy and support with their rescue medication and supporting a person with their percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG). A member of staff told us, 'We have had lots of on-site training as well, including lifesaving, fire safety, sepsis, moving and handling and PEG feed training.'
The registered manager had won an award for care manager of the year for the positive impact they had in managing and supporting staff and creating an open-door policy for people living in the service and the staff.
People were happy to talk about the activities they regularly took part in such as going for walks, shopping, spending time in the garden... gentle exercises... external musicians visiting. Some people were planning a holiday to Butlins... an activity co-ordinator... had been employed.
Activities are regular with a coordinator but mostly basic outings and exercises, no specialist therapeutic programmes or partnerships.
People were happy to talk about the activities they regularly took part in such as going for walks, shopping, spending time in the garden when it was warmer and the gentle exercises that took place in the home alongside external musicians visiting.
Some agency staff still used occasionally and cook position recently vacant, so not fully stable yet.
The registered manager told us they had employed a cook, but they had recently left, and this post was presently being advertised... Where agency staff were used these were staff that had worked in the service before.
