The provider had a proactive and positive culture of safety, based on openness and honesty. Staff listened to concerns about safety and investigated and reported safety events. Records for the administration of medicines needed on an ‘as required’ basis did not always give staff full information, however this was discussed with the registered manager during the site visit and resolved.
One staff member said, “I have worked in a lot of places, and this is by far the best place I have worked. I really like it here. This home is lovely, the atmosphere is nice.”
Based on the dependency tool, there was sufficient staffing at the service, however we discussed the feedback from staff during our site visit and the pressure sometimes felt by staff, especially on the first floor to meet people’s needs based on the staffing numbers.
Staff knew how to report abuse and told us they had received safeguarding training. Staff were regularly assessed as competent to give people their medicines.
Staff told us “I always see the managers. The registered manager is always going around and checking the rooms. I feel free to speak with her and the deputy manager and feel I am free to speak up.”
There was a range of activities available for people, we observed the activities co-ordinator to be enthusiastic and engaging. One relative said, “There is a new activities lady, she has engaged everyone and encourages all residents to join in.”
