"Staff feel supported in a positive culture with engaging activities, but unsafe medicines management and poor recruitment hold it back."
People’s medicines were not managed safely in line with the best practice guidance. Risks to people were not consistently reviewed. Accidents and incidents had not been analysed for learning and development.
Most staff we spoke with told us they felt comfortable approaching and the provider and management team with issues and concerns about people’s care and had confidence these would be listened to and addressed.
Staff were not always recruited safely. A staff member employed at the service had been dismissed from a previous caring role. The provider had failed to follow up the reason for their dismissal.
The provider’s staff training audit had identified that a staff member had not completed all their mandatory training. The provider had not assessed staff competency skills following training.
Governance systems had failed to drive the necessary improvements in the service, which included improvements in the care environment and identification of the risk of potential harm to people living at the service.
There were designated staff facilitating activities and opportunities for people helping to reduce social isolation. One person told us, “There are enough activities if you want to take part. I join in with the games sometimes.”
Medicines handling is unsafe with missing records and no checks on old patches or cream dates, adding risk to daily tasks.
We identified incomplete records in the service’s Controlled Drugs register... no records were available to confirm the removal of previous patches prior to application of new ones.
Hiring missed safety checks for some staff including one fired from a previous care job and inductions done in just 2 days.
We identified one instance where the registered manager had not followed the required procedures to ensure safe recruitment... induction records indicated that some staff members’ induction had been completed in just 2 days.
Mandatory training is not up to date for some staff and there are no checks to see if they can apply it properly.
The provider’s staff training audit had identified that a staff member had not completed all their mandatory training... The provider had not assessed staff competency skills following training.
