"Staff feel supported with good training and plenty of activities, but safety lapses, staffing shortages and poor leadership drag it down."
The provider did not always share safeguarding concerns with the CQC and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) applications were not followed up with the local authority in a timely manner. The provider did not always make sure medicines were safely administered including timing errors and missing protocols.
Most staff told us staff wellbeing was supported, the workload was manageable, and they received a considered response when they raised concerns. Staff members provided mixed feedback regarding their relationships with one another including some divisions between units.
The provider ensured staffing levels met the providers dependency tool, although people, staff and observations told us more staff were required. Staff spoke about the nursing unit being very busy and it being difficult to support everyone when some people required 2 staff.
The compliance rate for mandatory training for most staff was over 80%. Supervisions were taking place regularly with staff; however, appraisals were not with only 4 staff having completed an appraisal in 2025.
The leadership team had failed to identify some of the areas of concern raised on the inspection. The provider did not have appropriate governance systems in place and did not share information about risk securely with the CQC when appropriate to do so.
People and relatives said there were plenty of activities taking place at the home including karaoke, group exercise, a trip to the local garden centre, personalised shopping and various 1:1’s. The wellbeing coordinator was new in post and had plans to improve the scope of activities.
Not enough staff during the day and weekends so you're always rushing between rooms and some residents need two carers at once.
Relatives told us they felt there could be more staff, for example a relative said, “There are not enough staff during the day and at weekends. Because residents tend to like staying in their rooms, the staff are going from one room to another all the time and sometimes residents need two staff to support them at a time.”
Safeguarding concerns and DoLS paperwork not handled properly or reported to regulators on time, putting you at risk of missing serious issues.
The provider had not notified CQC, as required, about all the safeguarding incidents which were noted on their electronic safeguarding log sheet. The provider’s DoLS tracker was incomplete and not effectively maintained.
Leaders missed big problems like poor oversight of accidents, incidents and staff records so issues drag on without quick fixes.
The provider did not always have effective oversight of accidents and incidents. The registered manager did not maintain effective oversight system in key areas including no incident log and low staff appraisal compliance.
