"Decent training and some activities, but chronic staffing shortages, poor management oversight, and unsafe medicines handling make it a tough workplace."
The management of medicines was unsafe. People did not always receive the medicines they needed at the right time or in a safe way to prevent ill-health or the unwanted symptoms of the conditions the medicines were prescribed to treat.
Whilst some staff felt supported, others felt staffing levels and workload impacted on their well-being and the care provided.
During our assessment the number of staff on duty was not always sufficient to meet people’s needs. Staff spoken with confirmed this. An agency nurse told us, “From a nurse’s point of view, there are not enough nurses, agency nurses don’t like coming back. It is too much”.
Staff were recruited safely and had access to an induction and training. However, staff did not always receive regular supervision or an annual appraisal of their skills and abilities for the provider to be assured of their competence.
The provider and senior management team did not have effective oversight of the service to ensure risks to people’s health, safety and welfare were mitigated.
There was an activities co-ordinator employed by the service and some people confirmed activities took place whereas others told us they spent most of their time sitting in the lounge. The activities some people described included outside entertainers, physical exercises such as yoga, gardening and bingo.
Not enough staff on shifts, so care workers are stretched thin, exhausted, and can't give good care.
Short staffed at night, only 3 on shift in total for 27 residents and staff are knackered
Managers not keeping on top of big safety risks or fixing repeated problems in care.
Governance arrangements to monitor the quality and safety of the service were not robust. The provider and senior management team did not have effective oversight of the service
Medication handling is unsafe with wrong timings and poor checks, putting care workers at risk of errors.
