"Stable staff retention and family-like culture, but weak activities programme and unsafe medicines storage hold it back."
The provider had a proactive and positive culture of safety, based on openness and honesty. Staff listened to concerns about safety and investigated and reported safety events. Lessons were learnt.
One staff member told us, “We are all like a family here, we all work together.” One staff member told us, “There is always somebody you can go and talk to. You can talk to the manager as well.”
Both people and their relatives commented that the care team was stable with very low staff turnover which made a positive impact on the care and support people received. One relative told us, “There is a consistency of staff. They don’t use an agency here.”
Staff received regular supervisions. Staff were provided with training, and the overall training compliance was overseen by the registered manager. Training included a mixture of face-to-face sessions such as moving and handling and online training.
The registered manager was visible within the service and both people and staff felt they were approachable, and they could speak to them when needed. The registered manager told us, they had an open-door policy.
During our visit we saw staff responded promptly... engaging with them in an activity of completing puzzles.”
No activities coordinator or regular programme mentioned, so the job is mostly routine tasks like personal care.
Only observed one instance of staff engaging a person in completing puzzles; no structured programme or coordinator described.
Medicines sometimes left unlocked or in unsafe places at the start of inspection.
We saw people’s creams and ointments were stored outside locked cabinets. We also saw some people’s medicine cabinets were left unlocked.
No appraisals for staff in place yet, even with supervisions and training.
Staff received regular supervisions. However, we saw no evidence of appraisals taking place. We told the provider about this, and regular appraisals for staff were to be included in the provider’s action plan.
