"Staff work well as a team with meaningful activities, but staffing shortages, incomplete training, and unsafe medicines management are major concerns."
Medicines were not always managed safely. People did not always receive their prescribed medicines on time.
The staff team at Red Rose Community Care told us they worked well as a team. One staff member told us, “We work very well as a team, supporting each other and communicating effectively to give consistent, high-quality care."
Most of the people and relatives we had spoken with told us there was not always enough staff. One relative told us, “They’re understaffed all the time, they’ve got so much to do and juggle. They can’t care as well as they’d like to care.”
We found staff training had not always been completed. For example, staff had not completed anxiety training despite them supporting people with this.
There were gaps within the management structure that had impacted the oversight of the service. For example, the deputy manager had moved to another home within the organisation. The post had been filled by the clinical lead. However, they were unable to fully start their role as their current role was not covered.
Meaningful activities had been planned and taken place, however there was a risk of boredom and isolation when activity staff members were on leave.
Not enough staff at times, so people wait longer especially on weekends and dementia residents left without support.
we observed for a short time period there was no staff available to support people living with dementia who were showing signs of distress. This placed people at risk of avoidable harm.
Staff missing key training like for anxiety, even though they support people who need it.
staff had not completed anxiety training despite them supporting people with this.
Medications often given late and unsafe practices like leaving tablets for people to take alone.
A person who required time-specific medicines often received these late... We observed this person’s medicine was not administered on time during our onsite assessment.
