"Strong training, supportive management and positive family culture, but staffing shortages during breaks sometimes lead to missed activities."
Staff received training in how to identify potential abuse... People's care plans contained risk assessments... People received the medicines they required... stored, recorded and administered safely... Incidents logged and investigated.
The culture within the service was positive... staff told us they enjoyed their jobs... 'The staff are lovely; we are like one big family.' The service had a gold Investors in People award.
There were sufficient staff to care for people... We received mixed feedback about staffing levels... Our observations on the day were that people were cared for by a sufficient number of staff.
The service was accredited by the Nursing & Midwifery Council to provide learning and training for clinical staff... Six staff were currently working through this programme... Staff felt supported... through regular supervisions.
The registered manager knew people well and was always looking for ways to improve the service. Staff told us, 'With [the registered manager] we can talk to him about anything. He will find a solution for us. He is good at supporting the staff.'
There were a range of activities... quizzes, painting and have an exercise class... gardening and pottery... weekly cooking club... They have chickens in the back garden and the cat.
Staff numbers are usually enough but residents and relatives sometimes notice shortages during breaks or mornings.
Comments included, 'Sometimes, I don't think there are enough staff.' 'When the staff go for their breaks, you can see that they are short-staffed, sometimes there is only one person on duty here.' 'There are never enough staff – this morning they were a bit late getting me up.'
Activities programme is varied but sometimes gets skipped when staff are busy.
'You can tell that there are staff shortages because often the activities don't happen.'
