"Friendly approachable manager, positive culture where staff feel valued, and good training, but recruitment gaps and poor medicines safety create risks."
We found areas of medicine management that need to be improved... These issues left people at risk of harm as medicines were not always managed safely. Care plans and risk assessments did not include all the guidance staff need to help keep people safe.
Staff told us they felt valued and everyone worked well together. One staff member told us,” We have anti-discrimination policies... the manager is always open to listen to us.” Another said, “There’s so much love in this home, it's lovely.”
We identified criminal record checks and appropriate references were not in place for one staff member. Full employment histories were not in place for each person, gaps in employment had not been identified or explored.
There was a training program which staff completed and was regularly reviewed and updated. Following training, staff completed knowledge checks to demonstrate their understanding. Staff received supervision, and were supported to take on additional roles, develop and gain new skills.
Staff told us the registered manager was approachable, friendly, they were considerate of their wellbeing and personal needs. One staff member said, “You can talk to [name], she’s always available to talk to, she’s lovely, we're lucky we've got a lovely manager.”
Whilst activities were provided each day, these were group activities. They had not been developed to reflect people’s individual interests. One relative told us, “There is a lack of differentiated stimulation.”
Recruitment misses key checks like criminal records and job histories for some staff.
We identified criminal record checks and appropriate references were not in place for one staff member. Full employment histories were not in place for each person, gaps in employment had not been identified or explored.
Safety risks like poor medication handling and incomplete checks for pressure sores make the job riskier.
Medicines were not always managed safely... Care plans informed staff if people required regular position changes... These had not been completed and there was no information in daily notes to show people’s pressure areas and skin integrity had been checked.
Only basic group activities with no individual ones, so the role is mostly routine personal care.
Whilst activities were provided each day, these were group activities. They had not been developed to reflect people’s individual interests... There was a lack of opportunity throughout the day.
