"Some kind and caring staff promote independence through activities like trips, but unstable management, staff shortages and basic training hold it back."
Staff told us that they had completed training but some of those we spoke to were unclear about the actions that they should take and the reporting procedures... The guidance for staff to support people who experienced distress was not in place... records were not always detailed. Analysis was not comprehensive
We received inconsistent feedback about the care, empathy and support provided by staff. Some relatives talked about individual staff members and how kind and caring they were, but concerns were also raised about the commitment and quality of the support provided by other staff... some did the minimum required and left their family member in their bedroom with little or no engagement
The provider could not always demonstrate that there were enough qualified, skilled and experienced staff. They did not always make sure staff received effective support, supervision and development... There was a vacancy for practice lead and on alternative weekends there was no shift leader
There was no evidence that staff were supported to develop their skills and undertake additional qualifications. Staff spoken with... were not always knowledgeable about safeguarding procedures, mental capacity or first aid procedures, despite being recorded as having successfully completed eLearning. Only two staff had a NVQ qualification. One member of staff told us, “The training is basic….it’s a tick box exercise.”
Lynray and Peach Cottage had been without a registered manager for some time. A new manager had recently been appointed from within the staff team and had taken up post just prior to our assessment... it was too early to see if this was effective
Staff told us that they promoted people’s independence and choice and told us about the activities they had enabled people to attend such as banger racing, music festivals and zoo trips... However, we received different feedback from relatives who told us that... a number of the activities that their family member previously attended had stopped or had to be changed due to staffing... relatives expressed concerns about the quality of some of the activities and the focus on television, videos and walks to the local park
No permanent manager in post for a long time, and the new one is too new to know if things will improve.
Lynray and Peach Cottage had been without a registered manager for some time... A new manager had recently been appointed... it was too early to see if this was effective and brought benefits to people
Not enough skilled and experienced staff, with leader vacancies and poor shift oversight leaving gaps.
The provider could not always demonstrate that there were enough qualified, skilled and experienced staff... Management staff were available... but... there was a vacancy for practice lead and on alternative weekends there was no shift leader
Only basic tick-box training that does not build real skills or qualifications for most staff.
“The training is basic….it’s a tick box exercise.”... Only two staff had a NVQ qualification... relatives did not have confidence in the skills and knowledge of staff... 'the blind leading the blind'
