"Staff feel supported like a family with good training and engaging activities, but staffing shortages and infection control slips hold it back."
Issues were identified in relation to the environment of the home not being dementia friendly... staff were not always provided with guidance on how to support people in relation to their medical conditions... issues with the storage of continence products... food temperature probe wiped between checking meat and vegetarian meals.
Staff told us they felt supported by senior staff and were respected. A staff member said, 'I feel like we are like one big family here.'
The provider did not always deploy sufficient staff to meet people’s needs. For example, we observed staff on 1 floor who were responsible for administering medicines were also required to prepare breakfast and provide general support in the dining area.
Staff completed a range of training with a staff member commenting, 'Training is great here, and we get lots of chances to learn new things.'
Staff felt supported by the registered manager and senior management.
The provider employed an activities coordinator who organised a range of activities which people could choose to attend... arts and crafts, chair exercises, board games and gardening. The home was visited every week by a local nursery group.
Not enough staff at times, so care workers are rushed and can't always help people promptly like with bathroom calls or checking breakfast.
We observed occasions where people did not receive appropriate support because staff were busy supporting others... another person repeatedly requesting assistance to use the bathroom, but staff were not available... Staff raised concerns that the staffing levels were not always appropriate.
Some infection control slips like continence products stored unsafely and food probes not cleaned properly between uses.
Staff were storing open packets of continence products on the floor... bathroom... used to store multiple boxes... The probe was wiped between checking meat and vegetarian meals rather than being fully cleaned.
Checks and audits miss problems like staffing gaps and missing guidance on health risks, so issues build up.
The checks and audits which were in place were not always robust enough to identify areas for improvement... audits... did not identify issues... storage of unpackaged continence products... single food temperature probe... guidance not been provided for staff relating to people’s medical conditions.
