"Staff feel supported by management and describe a positive culture, but staffing levels sometimes feel short with agency use and minor medicines guidance gaps."
People were supported with medicines. However, we identified areas of improvement were required in relation to guidance about ‘as required’ medicines and the labelling of some creams and topical lotions. The registered manager acted immediately on the feedback given.
Staff described a positive culture and felt valued and listened to by the management team. Staff told us, “It is lovely. I would not want to work anywhere else” and “[Person] is fair and approachable and will take on board suggestions the staff team makes.”
Staff told us there were enough staff to provide safe and effective care. However, we did receive some feedback that staff levels could be improved. Comments included, “Staff levels are adequate” and “Sometimes it can feel as though there aren’t enough staff on and sometimes it feels like there are more than enough.” One staff member told us, “We utilise agency staff when needed and we have a good relationship with the agency.”
Staff spoke positively about the training they received. Staff received an induction when they started in their role, this included agency workers. Training was appropriate to enable staff to deliver safe care and ongoing supervision was available for staff to discuss any learning needs.
Staff felt equipped to carry out their role and felt supported by the management team and described a positive working environment. Relatives told us there had been changes of management, the current registered manager was always accessible when queries arose.
Relatives were complimentary about the activities and engagements Maple Lodge had in place to for people to take part in. This was reflected in our observations and feedback from people. Feedback from people and relatives demonstrated staff at Maple Lodge promoted activities and engagement led by the activities co-ordinator.
Staffing levels are adequate but sometimes feel short and they use agency staff when needed.
Comments included, “Staff levels are adequate” and “Sometimes it can feel as though there aren’t enough staff on”... “We utilise agency staff when needed and we have a good relationship with the agency.”
Some gaps in instructions for when to give extra pain relief and dates on opened creams, though fixed right away.
some ‘as required medicines’ needed clearer protocols to guide staff about when a person may need the additional medicine... Staff did not always record the date topical lotions and creams were opened, in line with best practice.
