The provider had a proactive and positive culture of safety, based on openness and honesty. Accidents and incidents were analysed and trends and patterns identified to minimise risk. Frequent medicines audits took place.
Staff told us they were happy working at the home, acknowledging improved changes since the commencement of the current management team. Staff told us they felt the current management team were approachable and felt supported.
The provider made sure there were enough qualified, skilled and experienced staff, who received effective support, supervision and development. They worked together well to provide safe care that met people’s individual needs.
One staff member said, “I have regular supervisions. They [management team] are supportive and give me the chance to discuss my progress, any concerns, and development goals. My manager is approachable and always available for support.”
The registered manager was supported by 2 deputy managers who worked alongside the manager supporting and guiding staff. Staff told us the management team were supportive. The home had 2 activity coordinators who organised social events. People had access to trips out to various places of interest as well as activities within the home. Local schools and churches were also involved in the home.
Staffing covers daily needs fine but on weekends care staff have to answer the door themselves until the new receptionist starts.
Some relatives told us there was nobody around in the reception area over the weekend and it sometimes took a while for staff to answer the door. We raised this with the management team who told us they had already identified this issue and were in the process of recruiting a weekend receptionist.
Training is standard with regular supervisions to talk progress but no funded specialist courses or career development paths.
Staff received training and support to carry out their role well. Staff responsible for administering medicines, received training and had their competencies checked to ensure they could administer medicines safely.
