Shortfalls in medicine management had been identified by an external stakeholder; the manager had acted with an action plan including more audits and training, but improvements were ongoing. Some staff found it difficult to evidence knowledge of MCA and DoLS.
Staff acknowledged the support of the manager and senior management team and of their colleagues who they felt worked collaboratively and effectively to meet people’s needs. Staff unanimously spoke in high regard of the recently appointed manager and of the positive impact they had on the atmosphere and culture of the service.
People were supported by sufficient numbers of staff. We observed a visible staff presence was maintained in communal areas, ensuring people had prompt access to assistance when required. Most staff stated there were sufficient staff to meet people’s needs.
Records showed staff had undertaken training in a range of topics related to health, safety and welfare. Most staff had also undertaken training specific to people’s needs, which included training on improving skills and understanding the needs of people with a learning disability those living with dementia. Staff spoke positively of the training they received, which included training provided by external health care professionals.
Staff unanimously spoke in high regard of the recently appointed manager, and of the positive impact they had on the atmosphere and culture of the service, and the changes they had brought about. A staff member told us, “The manager is very hands on, it’s the first time in a long we have had a manager on the floor.”
People spoke of their involvement in activities, both within the service and the community... bingo, arts and crafts, Church services, entertainers who sang, local market and café trips using community bus. Relatives noted an increase in activities with family participation.
Some problems with medication handling were spotted by an outside expert and are still being fixed.
