"Staff feel supported with strong leadership, excellent training and innovative activities programmes, although medicines records need more detail on times and effectiveness."
Medicines were managed and administered safely overall although we identified some areas where improvements to the systems in place would be beneficial. For example, medication administration records (MAR’s) should show the times of administration of medicines prescribed to be taken at specific times.
Staff said, “You can come in and discuss any concerns you have, about work or personal stuff, and they genuinely care. They’re not slack though; they will tell you if something’s not good enough or if something needs doing, but they’re really supportive as well”
Staff told us they believed staffing levels were appropriate and that a good mix of skills across teams meant they were able to effectively meet people’s needs. All the feedback we received about staffing levels was very positive.
Staff were up to date with training. They told us the training supported them in their roles, in a variety of ways that catered for different learning styles. They told us they were encouraged to consider any additional training they would like to undertake and that this was approved.
Staff said they felt supported, involved and listened to. The registered managers demonstrated positive values, a commitment to learning and improving and strong leadership skills, which meant the service was well run and managed.
Staff had sought funding for another person to train to present a programme on a local radio station which they were enjoying doing twice each week. A second person was also working toward doing this. One person had a lifelong strong interest in flying but had never had the opportunity to realise their ambitions. Staff... found a company offering flying experiences.
Medication records miss details like exact times medicines are given and notes on if they worked, so safety processes are good but not fully tight yet.
MAR’s should show the times of administration of medicines prescribed to be taken at specific times and the recording of where patches for pain relief were positioned should be more detailed. Protocols were in place for medicines given prescribed on an ‘as needed’ basis, but these did not include a space to record if the medicine had been effective.
