"Staff feel positive with good training and a wide range of activities, but safety lapses like unrecorded bruising and stretched staffing at busy times need attention."
Staff knew how to recognise and report any concerns relating to abuse. Medicines management systems were in place and infection control was managed well. However, we noted a person had bruising to both their hands, this was not noted in their care plan, or in any accident logs.
Staff were positive about the service they provided, the management team and liked working there.
There were enough staff to meet people’s needs. There were mixed views about how busy staff were and observations about their approach at times showed some staff needed development.
We reviewed the training matrix and saw most training was completed and in date. Staff received regular supervision and training.
The management team were present in the home providing support and guidance. They acknowledged this needed more development moving forward as this had not been as frequent with the changes being implemented from new provider.
The wide range of activities on offer certainly exceeded my expectations. Recently, after [a bereavement], my [person] was taken in their wheelchair on a shopping trip by the Activities Manager in the care home vehicle which was very thoughtful. For wellbeing the residents are offered regular hair appointments in the salon and manicures.
Staffing is adequate but gets stretched at busy times like mornings and mealtimes, and agency staff are not always up to the standard of permanent ones.
Some relatives told us agency staff that were used at times were not of the same standard as permanent staff. Some staff told us that at peak times, such as mornings and mealtimes, it could be busier.
Some safety lapses like unrecorded bruising and poor hoist transfers that left people uneven and at risk of injury.
We noted a person had bruising to both their hands, this was not noted in their care plan, or in any accident logs. 1 person was observed to be transferred with a hoist, and this was not done well. The person was left sitting unevenly in their wheelchair.
Management oversight lacks completion dates on action plans and consistent presence on the floor.
Where some areas needed further development, actions were implemented to make the changes. However, these needed further development to ensure actions had a completion date and a robust oversight of practice was in place.
