The provider had a proactive and positive culture of safety, based on openness and honesty. Staff listened to concerns about safety and investigated and reported safety events. Lessons were learnt to continually identify and embed good practice.
Staff we spoke to felt the management team were proactive and had made noticeable improvements to the service and staff morale had improved. Staff we spoke with told us they enjoyed working at Island Court.
The provider made sure there were enough qualified, skilled and experienced staff... However, we did identify gaps in recruitment documentation... some people did not receive their evening medicine... causing the service to be understaffed.
Staff were trained to complete their roles and meet people’s needs. The manager had oversight of peoples training. Where training was due to expire, we saw the manager had taken steps to set a deadline for staff to ensure training was completed by.
Significant improvements were evidenced during this assessment, this included new management oversight and leadership. Leaders were present and always adapted an ‘open door’ policy.
We observed during our visit group activities taking place, this included karaoke and a local singer attending... they have recently taken part in a project led by ICB around ‘Greener homes’... nominated for a Nursing Times Award.
Recruitment records were missing some checks for staff and one evening there weren't enough staff so some people missed their meds.
