"Approachable management fosters a positive culture and innovative activities, but medicines handling errors on one unit need attention."
On the first day of our inspection, we found medicines were managed and administered safely on one of the homes units but not always on the other... A staff member had signed to confirm administration... but the medicine had not been given.
Staff spoke very positively about the registered manager... 'The culture is nice, everyone seems to get on.' A staff member said, 'It’s one of the best care homes I've worked in; the core values align with mine.'
The provider made sure there were enough qualified, skilled and experienced staff... Recent developments... had resulted in improvements in staff retention at the home. These included welcome bags, enhanced communication, and flexible work arrangements.
Staff received the training and support they needed to undertake their roles effectively. Staff told us they felt supported and were positive about the training they received. The provider had a continuous professional development process...
Staff said, '[Registered manager] is great', 'Brilliant, very approachable, his doors always open' and 'Management are doing a really good job, they are flexible and approachable, very supportive.'
Staff had arranged for a horse to be brought to the home... a local scooter club had visited... trips to the Golf Club, cinema, primary school and nursery... ‘silent disco’... as part of dementia awareness week with case study on positive effects.
Medication handling had errors on one unit like signing for a missed dose and poor record keeping, even though managers fixed it straight away.
A staff member had signed to confirm administration of a steroid medicine on the morning of our inspection. No stock was available in the medicines trolley, and the medicine had not been given. Temperature records... were not completed... Staff had incorrectly signed a duplicated... MAR... Eye drops that exceeded the manufacturer’s recommended period... had been administered.
Staffing is good enough with recent fixes to keep more staff, but no details on long team stability or super low workloads.
Recent developments that were aimed at ‘keeping staff supported, satisfied, and engaged in their roles’ had resulted in improvements in staff retention at the home.
