"Supportive manager and positive culture, but major safety issues with medication handling and training gaps hold it back."
We identified 1 breach of the legal regulations under the safe key question. Medicines policies were not always adhered to... The service had not always learnt from incidents or took action to fully mitigate the potential risk of harm.
Staff told us that they had seen a positive change in the culture of the service and felt able to raise concerns which would be listened to and addressed.
People told us there was enough staff and they responded promptly when needed. Staff told us... they were able to manage but they were concerned should that increase without staff numbers increasing. During the inspection we observed that staff were not always present in communal areas.
50% of team leaders, who are responsible for administering medications, had completed the accredited medication training. Staff had been signed off as competent for medication despite documented evidence that they had not completed the relevant training.
Staff spoke positively about the new manager and said they felt well supported in their role. They told us the manager was approachable and listened to them. However, we identified a breach in relation to good governance.
Relatives... saw entertainment every time they visited such as singers and word games. We saw a monthly timetable of activities within the home; however, these did not always take place as scheduled. At the time of the inspection there was no activities coordinator in post.
Big safety issues like poor medication handling and unaddressed risks make the job stressful and unsafe
Medicines management and practice did not follow the policy in place, and we could not be assured that all staff were assessed as competent... Risk assessments were not always in place or were generic
Training gaps especially on medications and dementia care mean staff aren't fully skilled up
50% of team leaders... had completed the accredited medication training... they would benefit from skin integrity training and training to support those people with behaviours that challenge
Staffing feels stretched with staff not always around when needed in common areas
Staff were not always present in communal areas when people needed support, meaning they could not always respond promptly to people’s needs
