The provider had a proactive and positive culture of safety, based on openness and complete honesty. Staff listened to concerns about safety and thoroughly investigated and reported safety events. Lessons were always learnt to continually identify and embed good practice.
Staff described how working in accordance with the vision of Galanos House was personally fulfilling and ensured people received effective and responsive care. Comments included: “It is the satisfaction you have helped people to the best of your ability”, “We are here to enhance people’s lives... It is a very special place"
People and relatives mostly considered that staffing levels were good. They described a consistent team of staff who were visible and around to assist as needed. We received mixed feedback from staff about staffing levels in the home.
Staff training was refreshed at regular intervals to maintain their knowledge and skills. Staff responsible for training reviewed training content to ensure it was up to date and in line with current best practice guidance. There was a career pathway for staff, who had been supported to complete their apprenticeships, management qualifications and specialist training.
There was a strong and consistent management team who were very motivated to improve and develop healthcare provision both inside Galanos House and in the wider community. Staff told us managers were visible and supported them to provide high standards of care.
Thirty-one people in Galanos House had recently entered the ‘Road Worlds for Seniors’ challenge which is a global indoor cycling championship for seniors and people with dementia. The home had achieved first place in the UK overall... physical benefits were seen with a reduction in falls and increased strength and balance.”
