We found 5 of these [air mattresses] were set incorrectly... a pot of thickening powder on 1 person’s bedside table... excess medicine was stored in an open shelf which is not in line with best practice... items in the 2 first aid boxes had expired.
There was a good culture within the service. Staff spoke highly of management, “Management has an open-door policy. If I raise an issue they will deal with it straight away” and “The team is friendly and the manager listens to our ideas.”
Management made sure there were enough qualified, skilled and experienced staff... but recruitment processes required improvement as we found gaps in the employment history of some staff. Of the 7 recruitment files we reviewed all of them had unexplained gaps in employment.
Staff received appropriate training and supervision for their role... Staff said, “Training is great here and we get lots of chances to learn new things”... “I am doing NVQ level 3 at the moment.”
Staff were happy working at the service and told us they felt supported and listen to by management. Management had an open-door policy and were hands-on with night spot checks.
[Activities lead] puts on lots of activities, such as flower arranging, face painting and colouring displays... aromatherapy sessions with hand massages... staff encouraged one person to display their paintings as an exhibition.
Hiring checks missed gaps in every one of the seven staff files checked, even though they fixed it right after the inspection.
