"Strong culture and good training, but basic activities and occasional staffing waits need improvement."
The service had systems and processes in place to keep people safe... Minor concerns were found with medicine management; however, the manager took immediate action... to resolve these concerns.
Despite the manager being new in post we observed that management and staff had a strong shared sense of purpose to care for people demonstrating a positive culture. Time was required to build relationships... but both felt positive about the direction moving forward together.
Whilst there was enough staff to meet people’s needs, the manager had identified a need to review deployment of staff... People and relatives told us they would like to see more staff at the service.
Per 2020 comprehensive inspection: All staff were required to complete mandatory training... Staff training had a 98% completion rate.
A new manager had recently started at the service; however, they had considerable experience in care... The staff we spoke with were still getting to know the new manager but told us their initial impression was positive.
Although activities and events were available, more work was required... During the afternoon people were involved in musical bingo and sang along with staff.
Staffing is enough to meet needs but people sometimes wait 5 to 10 minutes, relatives say staff work very hard, and staff want one more especially at night if something happens.
A person told us, “I know there are 20 other people, but I have to wait 5-10 minutes sometimes.” A relative told us, “In all honesty they should have more [staff], staff work very hard and are good.” A staff member told us, “It would be nice to have another member of staff... particularly at night.”
Only basic activities like musical bingo so the job is mostly routine personal care with no coordinator or special programmes.
During the afternoon people were involved in musical bingo and sang along with staff while the music played. Although activities and events were available, more work was required to ensure people’s... social... needs were fully met.
New manager has just started so staff are still getting to know them and building relations takes time.
