"Staff feel happy and supported with good training and enjoyable activities, but serious medicines management issues and weak monitoring hold it back."
We found some shortfalls in the management of medicines and people did not always receive their medicines safely and as prescribed.
Staff told us they were happy working at the home, felt supported and listened to. They said they received training that equipped them to do their job well.
People told us there were usually enough staff available to care for them although they sometimes had to wait for support. One person stated, 'I have to use the bell and wait for them to help me. Sometimes you have to wait a while.'
Staff received regular training and had their competencies checked.
The provider’s monitoring systems had not always been effective as they had failed to identify and address the concerns we found during our inspection.
People told us they enjoyed the activities on offer... music festivals, even origami. They have had a therapy animal visit... outside entertainer... garden... BBQs.”
Medication handling has serious problems like delayed pain relief, using expired creams, and poor stock records, putting people at risk.
People did not always receive their medicines at the required time. One person was prescribed pain medicine to be given at specific times daily. However, we found multiple occasions when this medicine had been delayed for over 3 hours... label... discard this after one month of opening. However, we saw the staff had continued to administer this on 4 occasions 2 months after the date of opening.
Management oversight is weak because monitoring systems missed repeated risks like people leaving the building unsupervised through easy-to-open doors.
Processes to help ensure that risks to people were assessed and mitigated were not always effective and there had been repeated incidents whereby a person had left the building unsupervised... The provider’s monitoring systems had not always been effective as they had failed to identify and address the concerns we found.
Staffing is adequate most days but residents sometimes wait for help and one said staff seem rushed, maybe due to levels.
People told us there were usually enough staff available... although they sometimes had to wait for support... 'It might be me being fussy but I get the feeling that they are always in a rush. I’d like to have a chat sometimes, but I don’t think they have the time – it could be because of staffing levels.'
