"Staff feel supported with wellbeing processes and positive activities, but unreliable training records and unsafe medicines practices need urgent improvement."
The provider was in breach of legal requirements in relation to safe care and treatment and medicines management... We observed that people were not always having their regular medicines administered safely.
Most staff told us they felt supported and listened to. They told us there were processes in place to support their workplace wellbeing and named staff they could go to for guidance and support.
We received mixed views from people, their relatives and staff regarding the numbers and availability of staff at all times we observed... A staff member said, 'There are times when we are a bit pushed for staff.'
The oversight of staff training needed improvement to ensure robust records were maintained... the staff training matrix showed that not all staff had been allocated the necessary training relevant to their roles and showed incorrect figures of compliance.
The service was in breach of legal regulation in relation to governance at the service... Systems to audit the quality of care, safety including the management of medicines were not always effective in identifying and addressing areas of concerns.
The provider employed coordinators who planned and facilitated activities. People and their relatives spoke mostly positively about the range of activities provided communally.
Training records are unreliable and incomplete, so you can't be sure colleagues have all the needed training like for dementia care.
The staff training matrix showed that not all staff had been allocated the necessary training relevant to their roles and showed incorrect figures of compliance. Staffing feels stretched at busy times and weekends when sickness means covering shifts with no agency.
A staff member said, 'There are days when staff call in sick and we have to work with less staff. This can be hard. It is mostly weekends when they [management] try to get other staff to cover but it’s not always possible if it is last minute. We don’t have agency staff anymore.'
Medication rounds take too long and there are unsafe practices like dirty equipment and missing checks.
We observed the morning medicine administration round taking over three and a half hours to complete. Equipment used to administer medicines was not always clean, such as the tablet crusher.
