"Staff feel proud and valued in a happy, diverse team with strong leadership, but adequate staffing and standard training hold it back."
The service had a proactive and positive culture of safety, based on openness and honesty. They listened to concerns about safety and investigated and reported safety events. Lessons were learnt to continually identify and embed good practice. Accidents, incidents and events were recorded. The registered manager was informed of each incident and undertook reviews to identify trends.
Staff told us, “The registered manager is fair and flexible... We enjoy working here, it is a happy team”. Without exception, staff and the management team spoke highly of the diverse backgrounds... “Differences are valued”, “Differences are respected”. Staff appreciated support from the provider when their work schedules were accommodated...
The service made sure there were enough qualified, skilled and experienced staff, who received effective support, supervision and development. They worked together well to provide safe care that met people’s individual needs.
Staff received the training and support to ensure they could carry out their role. Staff told us they had training, and competency checks to make sure they gave medicines safely.
People and visiting professionals had confidence in the management of the service and told us the registered manager was approachable. Staff told inspectors they were proud to work at the service and described their experience of leadership as; “The registered manager sorts things out. If there is a problem, we address it, we learn from it and there is no one here who is unsupportive at all. I feel respected and valued.”
A staff member... researched the curriculum during the years they taught and asked the registered manager to purchase those books... now we are three books into a fabulous series and the resident gets that 1:1 reading time. People had actively participated... as murals included each person’s artwork... “I have my little garden out the front with my greenhouse and pots, I am also responsible for the bird feeders too”.
Staffing is adequate with enough skilled staff to meet needs, but nothing special like long team tenure or no agency use is mentioned.
