"Staff receive solid training and work in a supportive team culture, but stretched staffing and less visible leadership hold it back."
People received safe care from staff who knew them well and understood their risks... Systems were in place to keep people safe from abuse and harm. Some processes and documentation were in need of improvements, these were fully discussed and addressed by the end of our assessment... People received their medicines safely.
Staff overall, felt the provider and management team promoted openness and honesty. We saw staff throughout the site visit approaching and interacting with the management team in a way that showed mutual respect. Staff told us they were supportive of each other and worked well together as a team.
We observed that staffing numbers were stretched on the morning of the first day of the assessment. Staff told us, “Sometimes people are very wet in the morning, I think staffing needs to be increased both night and day, especially for emergencies, our residents can be very active at times.”
Staff had completed training, new staff had completed an induction programme, essential training and received competency checks to ensure their training had been put in to practise before working independently. Records showed that staff received regular supervision and appraisals.
recent changes in leadership had impacted on people, visitors and staff negatively. This was because the registered manager was not as visible or accessible due to supporting other services in the organisation. Staff and visitors were not sure of who was in day to day management of Caroline House.
A newly recruited activity lead had just commenced work and was completing their induction and said it was very thorough and they were reading care plans to get to know people, but at present can only work in communal areas until all checks completed.
Staff say shifts are too busy especially nights and mornings because some residents need one-to-one watching and others wake early wet or active.
We observed that staffing numbers were stretched... staff told us that they needed more staff especially as they have people who need 1-1 support... night staff don’t always have time to check people in the morning... staffing needs to be increased both night and day
The manager is not always on site as they help run other homes too so staff and visitors are unsure who is in charge day to day.
