The provider had a proactive and positive culture of safety, based on openness and honesty. Staff listened to concerns about safety and investigated and reported safety events. Lessons were learnt to continually identify and embed good practice. Staff managed medicines well.
Staff felt supported to give feedback and were treated equally, free from bullying or harassment. There was a culture of improvement. Staff told us, “Morale is good. We are well staffed. There is cover if anyone is off sick, staff help each other out. There is no arguing or unpleasant gossip.”
Staffing levels were appropriate to meet people's needs and there were sufficient numbers of skilled and experienced staff deployed to keep people safe. We saw staff supported people in a relaxed manner and spent time with them. “All our staff want to be here. We have a tough interview process.”
All staff had undertaken Oliver McGowan training, and training in behaviours that challenge. The registered manager kept oversight regarding staff training to ensure this was kept up to date. Regular competency checks were completed to monitor staff knowledge and practice.
Leaders were visible, knowledgeable and supportive. Staff felt supported to give feedback and were treated equally, free from bullying or harassment. Staff spoke highly of the registered manager: “She’s very approachable.”
Organised activities at Burlington Nursing Home included VE day singers and a magician with a live rabbit at Easter. The registered manager told us they also had themed evenings, for example Indian, Eastern and European evenings with food. There were various organised activities and also smaller more personal activities.
