"Regular manager checks and solid staff training, but severe staffing shortages and unsafe medicines management hold it back."
We identified 3 breaches of regulations in relation to safe care and treatment under this key question of safe. Medicines were not always managed and administered safely. People’s individual risks were not always managed safely.
We received negative feedback from all care and ancillary staff about the staffing levels at the home. Staff gave us examples of when providing care was difficult due to low staffing levels, one staff member told us, “It is horrible as I don’t have time to sit down and talk to people due to staffing issues.”
There was not always enough staff on duty to provide people with safe care and effective support.
A training matrix was in place that demonstrated most staff had completed their training. The home told us they provide end of life care; however, the staff training rates for end of life care were low.
The registered manager carried out many periodic checks, including daily walkarounds of the service and audits of care documentation. However, these checks had not always identified and/or actioned the concerns we found on this assessment.
Staff told us there was very little in the way of activities as the home’s activities and lifestyle co-ordinator had been absent for several months. One staff member told us, “No activities at all going on really. We had a singer last week and that was it.”
Not enough staff on shifts with high turnover so care is rushed and stressful for everyone.
There was not always enough staff on duty to provide people with safe care and effective support. Staff told us there was a high turnover of staff and many staff had left recently.
Medication not handled safely and risks like wrong diets or fluids not followed properly.
Medicines were not always managed and administered safely... We observed one person being given flapjack when their care plan stated for them to have a ‘soft option’. We also observed one person was being served a drink that was not thickened.
No activities coordinator for months so mostly routine care with very few events to break up the day.
