"Staff feel supported by an approachable manager and love their roles, but safety issues with medicines and accidents plus weak quality checks hold it back."
Medicines were mostly managed safely but we found a small number of discrepancies during a stock check of medicines. We raised concerns with the registered manager about the high number of accidents and incidents at the home.
Staff told us they felt supported in their role. One staff member told us, 'I jump out of bed every morning to come to work. I have always loved working here, your heart has got to be in it when you are a carer.'
We reviewed staffing levels and rotas and found suitable numbers of staff were on duty to provide appropriate support. The registered manager told us they had successfully recruited several new staff and no longer used any agency staff.
Staff received an ongoing programme of training and supervision to enable them to provide safe and effective care. Induction training was provided for any new staff, including the completion of the Care Certificate.
Staff told us the registered manager was approachable and supportive. One staff member told us, 'They [Manager] are wonderful, if I needed something they would put it into place for me, they are very approachable.'
The home had 2 activity co-ordinators in post, covering 7 days per week to provide a variety of stimulating activities for people. The registered manager showed us photographs of themed events, such as parties and trips out of the home.
Managers do not always spot problems like unsafe storage of thickeners or people getting care from staff of the wrong gender, so quality checks need improving.
We recommend the provider ensure oversight and quality and safety monitoring systems are robust enough to identify issues and ensure delivery of high-quality, person-centred care.
Staff are busy and working hard, so shifts feel stretched even with enough people on duty.
We saw staff were very busy on units and worked hard to meet people's needs.
