"Supportive management and positive staff culture, but poor recording of medicines checks needs fixing."
When medicines patches were applied, they were recorded on patch charts, and the application site rotated appropriately. However, regular checks that the patches were still in place were not recorded, which was not in line with the home’s medicines management policy.
All of the staff we spoke with were positive about their employment within the service. They told us they had regular supervision sessions and staff meetings which they found useful. They added that they felt valued and felt involved in decisions and could give ideas about how the service was run.
Work rotas showed enough staff were deployed to meet people’s needs. People and their relatives felt there were enough well-trained staff to provide the support people needed and wanted.
A member of staff said, “The induction was very good, and I felt the online trainer explained things very well. The company provides on-going training and options for further qualifications.” Staff told us they were trained well and encouraged to keep up with training.
Staff told us, “Registered manager and deputy always listen and give us advice. We raise any concerns on a day-to-day basis, and they will solve the issue or guide us to solve it. There is an on-call facility available at the weekends or evenings for management support and advice if needed.”
We saw a variety of activities on offer and staff encouraged people to participate. Comments from relatives included, “They’ve had pets in to visit and they take them round the rooms so no one misses out.” And “The activity ladies do 1-to-1 visits for people in their bedrooms”. A monthly residents activity meeting is held.
Some medication checks like patch monitoring weren't recorded properly, and audits missed issues with medicine procedures.
Regular checks that the patches were still in place were not recorded, which was not in line with the home’s medicines management policy. Regular audits took place which identified actions for improvement. However, they did not pick up the areas for improvement that we found.
Staffing levels are adequate with enough staff on rotas, but no details on low agency use or strong staff retention to make workloads easy.
