"Strong leadership, training and an open culture where staff feel valued and supported, but lunchtime staffing and basic activities need improvement."
The provider had a proactive and positive culture of safety... Staff ensured people’s medicines... were safe... We found 1 safeguarding incident which had been raised externally had not been notified to CQC as required, however, all others had been reported. The registered manager acted immediately.
There was an open culture, where people, relatives and staff felt able to raise any issues and were listened to... Staff told us they felt respected, valued, supported and listened to in their role. Feedback included, “I feel very valued for the work I do” and “Management supports me.”
People and relatives told us overall there were enough staff, which the staffing dependency tool confirmed... We found some aspects of the service could be further improved, for example, some staff’s spoken English skills and the deployment of some staff at lunchtime.
Staff told us they received ongoing training, competency assessments and supervision. In addition, they were supported to complete professional qualifications or to pursue any particular interests such as end-of-life care or wound care. Nurses’ registration was checked... and they were supported with their professional re-validation.
The registered manager has been registered for over 2 years and was very experienced. Since joining the service, they had developed both the home’s culture and the staff team to ensure they were working effectively together... Both were highly visible within the service and supportive to the staff team.
Staff provided people with a range of opportunities for social stimulation both through in-house activities and community links... The 2 activities staff utilised the 2 lounges... picture bingo... children from a local nursery came for their monthly visit... links with local primary school.
Enough staff overall but some have limited spoken English making chats harder, and lunch shifts feel stretched at times.
We found some aspects of the service could be further improved, for example, some staff’s spoken English skills and the deployment of some staff at lunchtime. The registered manager was already aware of these issues and was looking at how to address them.
Regular activities like bingo, crafts and school visits but no specialist programmes to make the role more varied and fulfilling.
