"Staff feel supported by approachable management and receive good training, but fluctuating staffing and inconsistent activities lead to rushed, task-focused care."
People received safe care in line with their wishes. Systems for recording and analysing accidents and incidents were used effectively. The provider had safe systems for appropriate and safe handling of medicines.
Staff felt comfortable speaking up and raising any concerns. Staff told us management visited the units most days, which meant they were visible and accessible.
Feedback from people, relatives and staff regarding staffing levels was mixed. Staff were constantly on the go, moving from one task to the next. This meant people did not always receive the level of input necessary.
Staff received enough training and ongoing support to carry out their roles. The average completion rate across all training sessions was 93%. Staff received 4 supervision sessions per year and an annual appraisal.
The home was well managed, with staff feeling supported and comfortable to raise concerns. People, relatives and staff told us the home was well led and they found the current manager to be approachable.
The weekly activity schedule was not always being followed. Mixed feedback was provided by people, relatives and staff regarding activity provision. A number of daily activities were advertised on each unit, however, based on feedback and observations, it was apparent these were not consistently provided.
Staff numbers fluctuate and staff are often rushed and too busy for unhurried care.
Staff also had mixed views. We were told staffing numbers fluctuated which impacted on how much time was available to provide care and meet people’s needs. Our observations during the assessment supported the view that care was very much task orientated, with staff having limited time to provide a more person centred approach.
Daily activities are advertised but not always done, so mostly basic or none observed beyond karaoke and games.
A number of daily activities were advertised on each unit, however, based on feedback and observations, it was apparent these were not consistently provided. During the assessment, we observed limited activity / stimulation being provided to people.
No registered manager in post during assessment, recent changes to management structure caused mixed staff feedback.
At the time of assessment, the home did not have a registered manager. The current manager had applied to CQC to be registered... Due to the number of changes within the home over the past 12 months, including to staffing structures, feedback from staff was mixed.
