"Approachable management and a positive culture where staff feel supported and valued, but safety lapses in infection control and medicines, plus recent agency staffing, hold it back."
Staff had not taken appropriate action in response to a contagious infection present during our inspection. We found some medicine bottles had not been dated upon opening, and there were gaps in the clinical fridge temperature records.
Staff were extremely happy working at the service and told us they felt supported and valued. There was a positive culture across the workforce and a shared commitment to providing good care.
Senior staff told us a higher number of agency staff had been used recently to cover annual leave, but that, normally there was little need for agency staff. We observed one instance where a person's call bell went unanswered for over 15 minutes.
We reviewed the staff training information and saw staff had completed essential training such as fire safety, safeguarding and infection control, in addition to more specific training like dementia, diabetes or catheter care.
People and their relatives said management were approachable and they felt comfortable raising concerns or suggestions. There were regular opportunities to discuss ideas and to give feedback on the care they received.
People were supported to take part in a variety of activities within the service and were also given opportunities to visit the local community, including shops and local attractions. Partnerships had been formed with local nursery’s, churches and the local football club.
Safety processes had gaps like not handling a contagious infection properly at first and missing checks on medication stocks and fridge temperatures.
staff had not taken appropriate action in response to a contagious infection present during our inspection. This issue was addressed and resolved following our visit. We found some medicine bottles had not been dated upon opening, and there were gaps in the clinical fridge temperature records.
Staffing is adequate but with more agency staff used recently for leave and one case of a 15-minute wait for a call bell.
